Hit the Road, Jack! Car Ride Tips for Toddlers

It’s Friday! Disney here we come!!

We are lucky enough to only live about 6-7 hours away from WDW, depending on how many potty breaks we have to take. However, 6-7 hours in the car with two kids can get a bit testy. Luckily (again!), we’ve figured out a few tricks to keeping our travelin’-toddler smiling. Here are

Jack’s Top 5 Favorite Things To Do on a Long Car Ride

#5 – Cheerios Books

Sure, we may have Cheerios all in our floorboards when he’s done, but how is that different from any other day?

#4 – Coloring

Our friend, Hannah, made Jack this adorable bag for his birthday. Isn’t it the cutest? It’s fantastic for taking his coloring books and crayons on the go; and recently we’ve discovered the magnificence of Color Wonder markers. They only show up on Color Wonder paper! No mess! Genius or what? And oh so perfect for car ride coloring.

#3 – Imagination Movers Pandora Station

{photo: Imagination Movers}

Pro to Imagination Mover radio: Tim and I kind of like their music too. Shh..don’t tell. [singing to myself] No, no! Don’t eat all the cookie dough…

#2 – DVD’s

Oh thank you, Lord, for the blessing of our van with a built-in DVD player!

#1 – SNACKS!

I don’t know if it’s just our son, or if it’s a common thread between all toddler boys, but as long as Jack has a snack in his hand, there is a smile on his face. Thus, on long car rides, we bring along copious amounts of snacks.

“Oh, I know, baby. I’m tired of being in the car, too. Don’t cry, have a snack!”

Works like a charm. See you when we get back!!

Moms Panel and a Little Fun Facts ‘n Trivia Friday

I applied for Walt Disney World’s Moms Panel!

I have wanted to apply for years, but our WDW vacations always occured on the week of applications, and until this year, there was never Wifi in the rooms for me to get online and apply.

{Yes! Fun Fact Friday: Now WDW Resorts offer free in-room Wifi, not to mention free internet connection in their parks and Downtown Disney!}

Oh the irony, right? I can’t apply to be on WDW Moms Panel because I’m always in WDW! Well, thanks to my little sister’s school schedule, we booked our trip a week later this year. So I did it. I applied.

And I’m nervous. Super nervous.

And excited. Super excited.

And let me just say, this application was for no Disney-knowledge-wannabes! They asked some tough questions!

Who is Margaret Kerry? What are the names of Ariel’s sisters? Oh, and don’t forget the trick questions; Which of these is found at WDW: Big Thunder Railroad, Mickey’s Philharmonic, Space Mountain, Main Street Neon Parade.

But they can’t stump me! Just so happens that Peter Pan is my all-time favorite everything, so I totally knew that Margaret Kerry was Tinker Bell’s body model, and that Ginni Mack was her face model and both were present at this year’s Desination D event! I’ve also watched The Little Mermaid enough to know the lyrics to Daughters of Triton (who loved them and named them well…) Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, Allana!

As for the trick question? Well all of those are alluding to an attraction at WDW, but Space Mountain is the only correct one. The others would be Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Mickey’s Philharmagic, and the Main Street Electrical Parade! Tricky, tricky, tricky!!

Wow. There have been lots of little Fun Facts ‘n Trivia in here today! Welcome back Fridays!

So wish me luck, say a prayer, cross your fingers, think happy thoughts…all of those little things people like to do. Thanks!

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: 50 Films

Trivia: What is the name of the 50th Disney animated feature?

That’s right, Tangled!

I love this movie, and I just so happened to have received it from my mother-in-law for Mother’s Day. [smiles]

In the special features it has this video of a countdown of Disney’s 50 animated films. Call me cheesy, but I got all goose-bumpy when I watched it. So many of my childhood memories are connected to so many of those movies, and I’m sure it will be the same for my children.

How about you? Are any of your childhood memories linked to Disney animated films? Which are your favorites?

Mine? There are too many to list them all, but Peter Pan (and probably Tangled too!) are right there at the top.

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Da Meets the Orange Bird

For all of you Disney blog readers, this is almost old news, but for those of you that don’t keep your nose in the know, the Orange Bird has made his way back to WDW’s Magic Kingdom! And how cute is he???

Seriously cute.

The Orange Bird used to call the Sunshine Tree Terrace his home. He stood behind the counter and was even a fur character that would walk about and greet guest. You may also recognize him as the Florida citrus growers mascot, as he used to welcome visitors to Florida at the state line welcome center, where they could stop and get a free taste of Florida orange juice. He was also featured in a few orange juice commercials! In other words, this little guy is a big deal. However, somewhere in the shuffle of the years the Orange Bird was phased out in renovations and completely disappeared from the Sunshine Tree Terrace in 1987. But now he is back!…in signage, merchandise, and the same sweet figurine that used to live behind the counter. But that’s not all, he also brings with him the return of the Citrus Swirl, a delicious dessert of orange slush and vanilla soft serve swirled together for a yummy cool-down treat.

But what is the best part, you ask?

Tim, or “Da” as Jack calls him, gets to go see the little guy in person this weekend!

What, whaa??

I know, totally not fair, right? But it just so happens that Tim’s job is sending him on a trip to the sunshine state tomorrow through Tuesday and next Monday he will be taking the Backstage Magic tour in WDW! Rough job. I have to admit that at first the green-eyed monster got a hold of me, but I’m slowly getting over it.

Kind of.

I’m just hoping he is able to snag some of the limited Orange Bird merchandise, and maybe get some up-close and personal pictures of the new Fantasyland expansion. I know his day will be all planned out for him (and rumor has it that will include lunch at The Wilderness Lodge’s Whispering Canyon Cafe…AHHH, that green-eyed monster is growling!!), so fingers crossed.

[Sigh] Ah me. Well happy Friday, friends! Hope you have as happy of a weekend as my dear, hard working hubby will. 😉

[Not So] Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Spring Training

Fact: Tim and I had originally planned to be in Disney this weekend to attend an Atlanta Braves spring training game.

Remember when we went last year? Man…that was fun.

Fact: Our plans fell through.

Fact: We’re super bummed about it as we watch the game we were supposed to be at on T.V.

[Sigh] Next year, for sure.

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse!

I told you I wouldn’t really be able to stay away for good…

…but today is just too special of a day not to blog!

Today just happens to be Mickey Mouse’s Birthday! Although Mickey Mouse had been in the works for Walt Disney months before, Mickey Mouse made his big screen debut in Steamboat Willie on November 18th, 1928. Yup! That makes the main mouse 83 years old today!

Wow. I hope I still look that good when I’m 83. 😉

Happy Birthday, Mickey Mouse!

“I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.”

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Too Spooky for Disney

Happy Friday! Here’s a little more Halloween-ish trivia for you…

What Walt Disney Company animated film was released under the banner of Touchstone Pictures because it was thought to be a little “too dark” for younger kids?

If you guessed The Nightmare Before Christmas, you are exactly right! However, Disney did re-release this much loved movie in 3-D in 2006 under the new banner of Walt Disney Pictures.

Wait. Does that mean that they think our kids are desensitized to that sort of material and no longer find it scary?

Heh. They’re probably right.

Hope you have a wonderful Howliday weekend! Be safe, and

Happy Halloween!

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Name that Ghost

In honor of the fast-approaching Halloween holiday, I thought I’d do a little spooky trivia today.

What are the names of the three hitchhiking ghosts in the popular Disney attraction, The Haunted Mansion?

Do you know?

These much beloved ghosts are said to be named by Disney cast members that worked on the attraction. Their names are Ezra (the prisoner), Phineas (the skeleton), and Gus (the traveler).

These hitchhiking ghosts have always been my favorite part of the The Haunted Mansion. However, even though I have ridden this ride, oh…a gazillion times (!), I have never had one of these fine fellows actually follow me home…

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: A Retro Anniversary

Walt Disney World trivia:

On what date did Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida open?

If you guessed October 1, 1971, you are correct!

Tomorrow, Walt Disney World will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary with a special presentation that will start at 10:00 a.m. at the Cinderella Castle Forecourt Stage. Also rumored to be in the works is a special fireworks presentation that will accompany Wishes at 9:00 p.m. In remembrance of the decade in which Walt Disney World opened it’s doors, park guests have been invited via Twitter (user name @RetroDayWDW) to break out their retro 70’s garb and don it for their day in the park. How great is that?! It will be interesting to see how many guests actually take part. I may wear some 70’s inspired clothing tomorrow, just for the fun of it!

So here’s wishing Walt Disney World a very Happy 40th Anniversary!…and to the mouse that started it all.
