Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: AVATAR at Animal Kingdom

Today’s fun fact is purely to keep you updated and in the loop on recent news in the World of Walt Disney. This bit of information has been all the talk and rage on many Disney blogs and sites, so you may have already heard about it. But in case you are not an avid Disney reader, like my wonderful hubby, who keeps me informed, I thought I would pass along the news for Fun Fact Friday.

Three days ago, Bob Iger announced a long-term creative partnership with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the fantastic world of AVATAR to Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom! They plan to start in 2013 on the construction of a new land in the already expansive theme park. They have yet to release many details on what the land will entail in attractions or precise location within the park, but promise that it will immerse visitors in the real and mythical worlds of animals and nature.

If you are anything like Tim and I, you are probably questioning why they would bring such a world to Animal Kingdom. Tim and I thought that Disney’s Hollywood Studios would be a much better fit for such a land when we heard about it’s conception. It was an amazing film, unlike many of it’s kind, in the world of cinematography and CGI technology. However, Disney explains their location choice by pointing out that Animal Kingdom accentuates and highlights adventure, living in harmony with nature, and environmental stewardship, which are themes that are deeply rooted in the story of AVATAR. Tim and I also guessed that it was a decent fit in the fact that in Animal Kingdom, you can trace along history and into the future in the lives of nature and wildlife; with Dinoland U.S.A. starting the timeline, leading up to a mythical look into the “future” with AVATAR.

So what are your thoughts on the new land? Is it something that interests you? Either way, with the expansion of Magic Kingdom in progress, and this new expansion in the works for 2013, Disney is proving themselves to truly be a company that is constantly dreaming and growing.

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Where Is It?

Happy Friday, friends!

The Elrods are still in Walt Disney World, having a blast, but sadly it is our last day. However, we have had so much fun this week, and look forward to getting back and blogging all about our 4th Annual Wedding Anniversary Trip!

Today though, I thought it would be fun to do another Where Is It post, where I post a picture of something on Disney property and you tell me where it is! Are you ready? Okay!

Surprise, surprise! It’s another Peter Pan find!

Where on Disney property can you spot this soaring Peter Pan?

If you guess the Marketplace’s Once Upon A Toy, you are right!

Peter Pan can be seen flying around and around in Once Upon A Toy, where you can get almost any Disney toy you can imagine! I am scared to death of future trips we will make into this store with Jack and Cole. I’m sure trips inside will result in our pockets becoming much lighter and our sons’ rooms becoming much more cluttered.

Ah well, the life of a parent, eh? And what am I saying…we decided to pre-plan our souvenir spending, right?

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Dining with a Five-Legged Goat

Today’s the day! Yippee! The Elrods are finally on our way to Walt Disney World!

For our trivia today, I wanted a fun fact that would tie in with a little of what we are doing today, so here we go.

Where on Walt Disney World property can you find a five-legged goat?

This is a pretty common fun fact, but if you are still a little stumped, here is a hint: According to the Elrod vacation itinerary, we will get to catch a glimpse of it this evening!

Well, the answer is not Animal Kingdom, although seeing a real five-legged goat might be cool…or maybe kind of sad…but the answer is actually Disney’s Contemporary Resort! It just so happens that that is exactly where Tim, Jack, and I will be dining with Mickey and the gang tonight at Chef Mickey’s!

In the center of the first resort built on Disney property is a multi-story, tiled mural that was designed by Mary Blair, the same woman to design much of the look of the famous It’s A Small World attraction. She added the now much beloved five-legged goat into her mural to give nod to the fact that nothing in life is perfect.

Have you ever found the five-legged goat for yourself? I have to admit that it is not as easy as it seems. My family and I walked around and around this four-walled mural before realizing we needed to be a level up, next to the monorail, to be able to spot this little guy. Tricky, tricky, Mary Blair…but I like it!

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: The Vacation Giddies

Fun fact for the day: I’ve got the WDW vacation giddies! Remember that paper chain I made for vacation?

Well, it’s getting awful short!

Tim and I were talking a few days ago about how excited we are to be getting away to The Most Magical Place on Earth soon, and we started listing off things that we are determined to do while in Disney this year. Many of them we have never done, despite having been so many times! Wanna hear ’em?

Well, okay…if you insist!

1. Eat at Chef Mickey’s for the first time ever. Lucky for us, we have reservations for the day we arrive!

2. Get Jack’s hair cut at the Harmony Barber Shop in Magic Kingdom.

3. Eat a turkey leg.

4. Explore Tom Sawyer’s Island.

5. Get a coffee from the Kona Island Cafe Coffee Bar.

6. Eat a Mickey-shaped pretzel. They’re new!

7. See It’s Tough to Be a Bug in the Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom. No, I’ve never done this! Can you believe it?

8. Eat the Freshly Made Potato Chips at Magic Kingdom.

9. Get Jack’s next growth chart picture in front of the totem pole at the front of the Wilderness Lodge’s gift shop.

Don’t mind me or the random man in this picture, but this is him at 6 months. We’ll do better next time of getting a good shot. 🙂

10. Try to talk my husband into letting us get tickets to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Hehe. I have done it, but he and Jack never have!

So is there anything on our list that you have never done? Or maybe something that you have done and want to offer up any “first timers” advice or critiques about?

I hope you are having a very fun Friday! T.T.F.N!

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: D23 Expo Info

Hello! Today I will be guest blogging about a Disney fun fact for my wife, Malorie. I’m not sure if this is the last time she will let me take over the blog, so enjoy it while you can! 🙂

This weekend in Anaheim, California, the 2nd ever D23 Expo is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center. The D23 Expo is a part of D23, was introduced on March 10, 2009 by Robert Iger during the company’s annual meeting in Oakland, California. The name D23 refers to Disney and 1923, the year the company was founded. The goal of D23 is to communicate with Disney fans by “placing them in the middle of the magic.”

This year, The D23 Expo presents special panels and presentations, movie screenings, celebrity appearances and autograph signings, plus new insights into movies, TV shows, theme parks, animation, Disney history, and more. Celebrities that have appeared in the past include John Travolta, Patricia Keaton, Johnny Depp, Robin Williams, Selena Gomez, Tim Burton and more!

Some of the anticipated announcements from Disney lovers at this years Expo include the possibilities of a Monster’s Inc. Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a new Disney Vacation Club at Disney’s Grand Floridian, and more artwork and details on the new Fantasyland expansion at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Here are a few sneak peak pictures from the Expo center floor this year:

Entire Seven Dwarfs ride vehicle mock up!

New Fantasyland Model

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree vehicle for Disneyland

The new Minnie Mouse statue to be place in Fantasyland

Our good friends over at wdwnewstoday will have live coverage and streaming all weekend long at http://wdwnewstoday.com/d23. Feel free to check it out!

Until next time!

Tim

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Just Goofin’ Around

Happy Friday! It’s finally here!

Not long ago my friend Stacey was over for a “play date” with her son Jacob, who is just a few months older than Jack. Stacey is a Disney fan too, so of course we had Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the TV in the background for the boys while they played and took turns bopping each other the head with various items. (Yes, they are at that age.)

While the show was going, our Mommy-talk shifted to what was on TV and we wondered allowed to each other what Disney was going for in their Goofy character?

C’mon. You know you or someone you know has asked the same question before. What is Goofy? He’s just so…Goofy!

In a sort of response I reminded Stacey of Goofy’s original character name…which is what today’s trivia is:

What name was originally given to the silly guy we now call Goofy?

If you guessed Dippy Dawg, well you’re right!

Dippy DAWG! Which gives us some indication of what Disney was going for in creating Goofy.

After stating this, Stacey and I did start to see some similarities in the looks of Goofy and Mickey’s best pal, Pluto. Same ears. Same facial structure. The strange thing is that they are both dogs but Goofy is obviously more intelligent. Well, slightly. He does talk, wear clothes, and walk on two feet.

Yes, strange indeed. But strange or not, who doesn’t love that giddy, galumphing, Goofy? I still have memories of watching the old Mickey Mouse movies, my favorite always being Mickey’s Birthday Party. Remember that one? Where Goofy is in charge of making the cake and ends up blowing it up several times? I always loved the part where he danced with the mop around the room.

What’s your favorite Goofy memory?

Well, with today’s post and Wednesday’s [Almost] Wordless Wednesday picture, it has been one Goofy week!

And that’s just the way I like it.

We are Proud to Announce!!….

[Trumpet flare!]

I am here and happy to announce that Gummy Bear is…

Oh. My. Word.

We. Are. Ecstatic!

Admittedly, I was pretty much convinced that it was a girl because my pregnancy has been so different than it was with Jack. However, in my in most hearts I really wanted another boy. Here’s why:

1. I wanted Jack to have a buddy. They will be a 18 months apart which is practically nothing in the grand scheme of things. In short, these boys are going to be life-long friends and confidants.

2. Ease. We have everything we need. All we need is a double stroller and diapers, diapers, diapers!

3. This vision in my head: Two boys, approximately ages 6 and 7ish, running around Magic Kingdom, freshly costumed and painted from their visit to The Pirates League, sword fighting, causing a ruckus, and making me want to pull my hair out. Priceless. And I can’t wait.

Lastly, we would like to announce that Gummy Bear will from here on out be referred to as

…because that is his name and he answers to it.

Thanks for stopping by, celebrating with us, making your guesses, and leaving us so much love in the form of comments, Facebook statuses, messages, Tweets and texts.

This Disney family feels so loved.

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Boy or Girl?

Believe it or not, today’s fun fact has absolutely nothing to do with Disney.

If it is solely Disney trivia and fun facts you seek, then thanks for stopping by and please come back next week where I will be back to blogging about all-things-Disney. However, today I am simply too excited not to talk about this Elrod family fun fact!

Today is the day that we find out if Gummy Bear is a boy or a girl!

In the words of Mickey Mouse, “OH BOY!”

We simply can’t wait. Our appointment is for this morning at 9:15 a.m. and then this evening we will have dinner with our family to announce the sex. After that, somewhere around 8:00 p.m., I plan to return back here and let you know too!

So take your guesses and meet me back here this evening to see if you are right! It’s kind of like trivia that I don’t even know yet.

Here are some stats to help you make a guess:

I was only slightly nauseous during the first trimester, but never truly “sick”…if you know what I mean.

The heartbeat at the first ultrasound was 157 bpm. At our most recent appointment it had dropped to the mid-140’s.

I crave only sweet things.

So what do you think? Boy or girl?

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: This Day in WDW History

July 29, 2011.

Here’s some fun trivia on a fun, summer Friday.

Which Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction opened on this very day exactly twelve years ago?

Here’s a cheesy hint: “Walk This Way” and “Come Together” with your family on a fast-paced ride where you “Won’t Wanna Miss a Thing”. Think there’s a more exciting Walt Disney World attraction than this? Well, “Dream On”.

Haha! That’s right! The Rockin’ Roller Coaster!

The Rockin’ Roller Coaster opened on July 29, 1999! Climb aboard a lightening-fast stretch limo and take a high-speed ride to Hollywood where you make it just in time to see Areosmith in concert. Expect some twists and turns, loops and cork-screws, and a take off that will knock your rock-n-roll socks off!

Happy Birthday, Rockin’ Roller Coaster! Twelve years, and still going strong! Rock on!!

Fun Facts ‘n Trivia: Movie Quote Quiz

Welcome back! It’s 6:00 p.m. and I have to say that I am pleased with the participation in this Friday’s trivia! Thanks to all of those who cast their vote.  This morning I asked you if you could identify who said this Disney movie quote:

“Oh that clock! Old killjoy.”

I must confess that I love this quote. I catch myself saying it from time to time, and my mother claims that even as a young child I used to walk around the house saying these very words.

I guess my love for movie quotes started young.

Well, the answer to the trivia is…

Cinderella from the Disney animated feature Cinderella! Did you get it right?

“Oh, that clock! Old killjoy. I hear you. ‘Come on, get up,’ you say, ‘Time to start another day.’ Even he orders me around. Well, there’s one thing. They can’t order me to stop dreaming.”

No, Cinderella, they certainly can’t order us to stop dreaming…and perhaps someday…the dreams that we wish will come true.
